BalognaPalooza set for Saturday 8/22

If you love lunch meat, the Goffstown Rotary’s BolognaPalooza might be the place for you this Saturday.
“We’re getting a lot of people laughing about it, and that’s OK, because it is kind of cute and funny,” said Dianne Hathaway, a member of the Rotary Club and the director of the Goffstown Public Library.
But the proceeds of the event, which will be held at the Villa Augustina School, are no laughing matter: they will help the Rotary fund its programs in a year when money has been short, Hathaway said.
“The last year or so has been pretty tight for us financially,” she said. “We give pretty much all of our money away.”
It’s the first time the Rotary is holding a bologna-centric event, Hathaway said, but not the first time they’ve handed out the food.
“We have a wiener-mobile that we take out and sell hot dogs and hamburgers, and we also sell grilled bologna sandwiches,” she said.
The wiener-mobile, a hot-dog shaped cart, will be part of the festivities. There will also be a chance for hungry visitors to try to rival the competitive eaters who show up in Coney Island each year to scarf down hot dogs: a bologna eating contest.
“On sticky white bread,” she said. “That should be fun.”
Don’t like bologna? There will be plenty of other activities, Hathaway said.
“We’re going to have free cotton candy, and pony rides, and face painting,” she said.
There will also be K-9 demonstrations by the police department, a petting zoo, and finger-painting. Live music will begin at 3 p.m., with the band Sandy Money taking the stage.
Hathaway said she hoped the event would attract many from the community to come out, enjoy the day, and help others.
“It just builds good will with the community in a tough economy,” she said.
The event begins at noon. Tickets are $10 for adults, but children are free. For more information, call 497-8228.
