Gov. Lynch tours flood areas
State warns that flood danger could be high this year

GOFFSTOWN – Gov. John Lynch and other emergency officials on Tuesday toured one of the areas hardest hit by the last two rounds of spring flooding.

Many of the houses in the Danis and Lynchville Park sections of Goffstown have recently been rebuilt after the last round of storms. Lynch said he wanted to talk to residents and make sure state and local officials are on the same page if floods hit again.

Resident Rhonda Scheerders has piled sandbags against the front of her garage in preparation of more flooding. She told Lynch that she lost her home in 2006 and doesn't want to go through that again.

"Am I concerned?" Scheerders said. "Every time it rains, I think the whole neighborhood is concerned. Every time it rains down here, everything is up in the air in your garage."

Flooding could be a concern this year because of the large amount of snow pack on the ground. Officials have said if the snow melts too fast or if heavy rain falls on top of it, it could lead to problems.

"There are probably two months worth of rain in the snow pack, and that means we are really more vulnerable today than we were last year or the year before," Lynch said.

Goffstown residents said flooding has been a perpetual problem in parts of the town.

"My plow trucks that were in the street were full up to the roof," flood victim Mark LaRochelle said.

Emergency officials say they want to be prepared to respond to flooding and reach out to potential victims before the waters start to rise. They said having a generator, a sump pump and extra supplies on hand is a good idea. Many of the houses in flood-prone areas now have raised foundations.

"The recipe to have a serious flood situation is here, and so if we have a nice spring with warm days and cold nights, we're in great shape, but if we have a storm like the Mother's Day event or the spring nor'easter, that's the type of thing that could really cause a problem," said Chris Pope, state director of emergency management.

State officials said they can't stop the rain from coming, but they can be ready to help those affected when it starts.
