Goffstown man charged in I-293 crash

BEDFORD -
A wrong-way driver, whom police charge was drunk, crashed into and killed a Merrimack man on Interstate 293 early Saturday, police reported.

Edward G. Bailey, 63, of Merrimack, died of injuries sustained in the collision, and the other driver, Jason Lambert, 35, of Goffstown, was arrested, state police reported.

Police said Lambert was driving north in the southbound lanes of the highway at about 12:23 a.m. Saturday when his 2004 GMC pick-up truck crashed head-on into a Bailey's 1999 Saab, in the stretch of highway near Macy's department store.

Bailey was brought to Dartmouth Medical Center in Lebanon, where he later succumbed to his injuries, police reported.

Lambert was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. While DWI is generally a violation, it is likely that Lambert will ultimately face a felony negligent homicide charge, punishable by up to 7 1/2 to 15 years in prison.

State Trooper Michael Cedrone is investigating the crash, and witnesses or anyone with information is urged to call state police at 672-3333
