Don’t Be Afraid to Enjoy the Outdoors Because It’s Hunting Season

As Rob Burbank, Public Affairs Director for the Appalachian Mountain Club, says, “Often, those who are unfamiliar with hunting are fearful of going into the woods in the fall. Being cautious in the backcountry during hunting season is wise, but fear isn’t necessary if you dress properly and choose an appropriate destination.”

Rob further stated that, “Hunters wear blaze orange clothing to be seen in the woods and hikers, wildlife watchers and their canine companions should do the same.” I was sitting near a tree watching for a deer while hunting one year in Mont Vernon, when I heard a group of people coming up the path. They were talking loudly. They were dressed in dangerous colors of white, brown and black. Their two dogs where brown and black and white in color.

Wearing my Blaze Orange hat and hooded jacket and holding my rifle, I stepped out of the brush onto the dirt path and they were shocked. “Oh my God!” one of them said, “We didn’t know it was hunting season yet.,” . I explained to them that they were taking an unnecessary chance wandering around in the color of clothing they had on, most especially the color of their dogs. I explained that in going afield in the fall during hunting season, they would be entirely safe if they would just wear a combination of clothing items of Blaze Orange color, such as a hat, vest and or jacket. I also informed them that their dogs should have Blaze Orange dog vests on them because, under the right conditions, without, they could clearly and easily be mistaken for an animal being hunted.

I told the group where they could purchase the Blaze Orange, usually called Hunter Orange, clothing items they should wear.

According to one of the ladies in the group, they were out just walking the dogs on the path. “The outdoors is for all to enjoy. However, from September through December, hunters maybe in the woods and fields and therefore, you should always play safe and wear Blaze Orange items during these times.”

The Bear Brook State Park area is another concern. Bicyclists often ride the trails and paths during the fall months. Yet, they do not seem to adhere to safety precautions during the fall months either. They should also be wearing items of Blaze Orange when riding through the woodland areas. Oh yes, I’ve had people tell me they wouldn’t wear Blaze Orange for any reason because they don’t approve of hunting. That attitude can get you and your pets in trouble. Why risk your life?

So, be safe and enjoy the outdoors more instead of being afraid. Wear a Blaze Orange cap, vest or jacket whenever you are in the woodlands of New Hampshire in the fall months and feel safe enjoying your experience.
